Escalating Tensions Amidst Calls for Diplomacy in Cyprus
The chasm in perspectives between United Nations Special Envoy Maria Angela Holguin and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has become starkly apparent. Their grievances spilled into the public eye following a series of interviews where both parties openly criticized each other’s stance on the ongoing Cyprus issue.
Holguin expressed her astonishment at Tatar’s rejection of a trilateral meeting, which she proposed to foster dialogue with President Nikos Christodoulides. Despite the setback, she remains optimistic, citing Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s receptiveness as a positive sign. “I will not comment on specific proposals; however, I will continue to meet with parties because I have not abandoned hope,” Holguin stated, emphasizing her commitment to seeking common ground.
Conversely, Tatar voiced his discontent with Holguin’s approach, particularly her outreach to individuals he considers extreme opponents. He questioned the effectiveness of her efforts and reiterated his stance against a meeting that would not recognize the equal status of the Turkish Cypriots. Tatar’s frustration was palpable as he remarked on the futility of discussions without shared objectives, underscoring his belief that Holguin fails to grasp the complexities of the Cypriot reality.
Amidst these exchanges, Holguin continued her diplomatic efforts, engaging with key figures such as Sener Levent, a prominent journalist, and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci. She maintains that diplomacy is crucial, advocating for dialogue as a means to bridge divides and alleviate the long-standing uncertainties plaguing the island.
As Holguin prepares to present her findings to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres after her third official visit, she reassures both sides of her impartiality and dedication to reflecting the truth. She proposes a meeting in the 5+1 format as a minimum gesture towards the people of Cyprus, signaling her unwavering resolve to give diplomacy every chance for success.
