Escalating Tensions Amidst Calls for Diplomacy in Cyprus
The chasm in perspectives between United Nations Special Envoy Maria Angela Holguin and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has become starkly apparent. Their grievances spilled into the public eye following a series of interviews where both parties openly criticized each other’s stance on the ongoing Cyprus issue.
Holguin expressed her astonishment at Tatar’s rejection of a trilateral meeting, which she proposed to foster dialogue with President Nikos Christodoulides. Despite the setback, she remains optimistic, citing Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s receptiveness as a positive sign. “I will not comment on specific proposals; however, I will continue to meet with parties because I have not abandoned hope,” Holguin stated, emphasizing her commitment to seeking common ground.
