Transport Minister Deems Lack of Shelter at Paphos Bus Stop ‘Tragic’
In a recent turn of events that has sparked public outcry, an image depicting an elderly woman lying on the ground at a bus stop in Paphos without a shelter has been described as “tragic and unacceptable” by Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades. The photograph, which circulated widely on social media, highlighted the plight of the woman braving the intense heat of the sun, while another sought refuge under a nearby tree.
The minister’s comments reflect a growing concern for the well-being of citizens, especially the vulnerable elderly population. “This is tragic and unacceptable. It is something that no one can tolerate. As such, we have to think of a solution which will deter something like this,” Vafeades stated, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
However, the Paphos municipality has raised concerns over the potential political motivations behind the circulation of the image. They revealed that the women captured in the photograph are a mother and daughter duo from a local village known for their unconventional lifestyle choices, including living without electricity and basic amenities. The community leader confirmed these details, painting a broader picture of the individuals’ unique circumstances.
The municipality has criticized those sharing the image, accusing them of exploiting the situation to mislead the public and undermine the municipality’s achievements over the past decade. Despite these claims, citizens are questioning why a lifestyle choice should impact the availability of a bus stop shelter.
Addressing the concerns raised, the municipality has clarified that the transport ministry has taken responsibility for the issue. Plans are underway to construct shelters at approximately 200 bus stops throughout Paphos and Yeroskipou, ensuring that residents will have access to protected waiting areas in the near future.
