Nicosia Shines as a Top Destination for Coffee Lovers
In a delightful revelation for coffee lovers, the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, has been recognized as one of the top five cities in Europe to enjoy a cup of joe. This accolade comes from a comprehensive study by Ubuy, which considered several factors that contribute to a city’s coffee culture.
The criteria for the ranking included the density of cafes, with Nicosia boasting 61 cafes, translating to 30 per 100,000 inhabitants. The study also looked at the average price of coffee, as well as environmental factors such as sunshine hours and rainfall during the peak summer months. Nicosia outshone its competition with the most sunshine hours and the least rainfall in June through August, creating an ideal climate for sipping coffee outdoors.
While Greece’s Athens took the top spot, followed by Lisbon, Rome, and Madrid, Nicosia’s position in the fifth place is particularly noteworthy. The city surpassed other well-known capitals like London, Berlin, and Vienna, which landed in the 11th, 14th, and 18th spots respectively. Even more surprising were the rankings of Andorra la Vella and Tirana, which clinched the seventh and eighth places.
The timing of this recognition coincides with recent data from Eurostat indicating a decrease in coffee prices in Cyprus. From March 2023 to March 2024, coffee prices fell by 2.3 percent, countering the trend seen across the EU where prices rose by one percent on average. Despite this decrease, Cystat reports that the average price for a regular cappuccino in Cyprus is €3.27, still higher than in some other European countries.
This juxtaposition of affordable coffee prices and an inviting climate makes Nicosia an attractive destination for those seeking a caffeine fix in a Mediterranean setting. The city’s burgeoning cafe scene is ready to welcome visitors and locals alike, promising a blend of quality brews and sunny dispositions.
