Ankara’s Role in Cyprus Talks Highlighted Amidst Diplomatic Efforts
In a recent press briefing, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized the pivotal role of Ankara in resolving the longstanding Cyprus problem. The spotlight on Ankara comes as part of a broader discussion on the importance of EU-Turkey relations in facilitating peace talks.
Addressing queries about potential divergences between Ankara and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, Letymbiotis reiterated that the key to progress in negotiations is indeed with Ankara. This acknowledgment comes alongside comments from Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who has been noted for his open-minded approach to dialogue.
The government’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to peace talks was underlined by Letymbiotis. He conveyed that ongoing diplomatic efforts are essential for creating the right conditions for discussions to recommence. The government’s dedication to dialogue as a means to address the concerns of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots was also highlighted.
The Greek Cypriot side has shown a willingness to engage, responding positively to UNSG envoy Maria Angela Holguin’s proposal for a joint meeting, which would also include Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and both negotiators. However, Tatar has declined the offer, expressing his reluctance to participate in a format that he perceives as unequal.
Letymbiotis pointed to recent initiatives, including measures for Turkish Cypriots and statements from the European Council, as indicators of the potential for advancement in EU-Turkey relations through progress on the Cyprus issue. These steps are seen as sending a constructive message to Turkey, with the aim of breaking the current deadlock and restarting negotiations.
With Holguin set to continue her engagements in EU capitals and Ankara, her commitment to persist with peace efforts has been welcomed by Letymbiotis. He concluded by affirming that diplomatic channels must remain open and active, allowing diplomacy to fulfill its crucial role in the quest for a resolution to the Cyprus problem.
