EU Complaint Targets Temu for Consumer Safety Breaches

EU Consumer Safety Concerns Raised Against Online Marketplace Temu

In a recent statement, the Cypriot Union of Consumers and Quality of Life has raised alarms regarding the online platform Temu, citing non-compliance with European consumer safety legislation. The consumer group has expressed concerns that Temu’s practices may be putting EU consumers at risk by not adhering to the necessary safety standards and transparency required by EU law.

The organisation has highlighted that Temu, which boasts a substantial user base of over 75 million monthly users in the EU, fails to provide adequate information about the sellers on its platform. This lack of transparency is a direct violation of European product safety standards, which are designed to ensure that all products sold, whether from European or other origins, are safe for consumers.

Furthermore, the consumer group accuses Temu of employing manipulative tactics that impede consumers’ ability to make informed decisions. These allegations have prompted calls for the government’s consumer protection service to investigate the online platform and take appropriate action.

In addition to the local outcry, Temu has attracted international attention with a EU complaint lodged against it. Reuters reported that the platform is accused of breaching the EU’s Digital Services Act. The Act mandates that online marketplaces and intermediaries actively combat illegal content, harmful material, and counterfeit goods.

The Pan-European consumers organisation BEUC, along with 17 of its member organisations across countries like France, Italy, and the Netherlands, has filed complaints with both the European Commission and national authorities. The complaint specifically mentions Temu’s use of “dark patterns” to manipulate consumer spending and a lack of clarity in how products are recommended to users.

Despite these allegations, Temu has stated its commitment to adhering to local laws and regulations and adjusting its services to align with regional preferences. As the platform faces scrutiny in the EU, it is also contending with class-action lawsuits in the US over alleged failures to protect user data online.

As regulatory eyes turn towards Temu, it remains to be seen how the platform will adapt its operations to meet the stringent demands of European consumer protection standards.

Online Marketplace
Temus challenges with EU laws stem from strict e-commerce regulations, consumer protection standards, and data privacy rules like GDPR, which necessitate rigorous compliance efforts for online marketplaces.
