Unexpected Turn of Events at Valhalla Golf Club
The serene greens of the Valhalla Golf Club were disrupted Friday morning as the PGA Championship’s second round faced an 80-minute delay and an unforeseen incident involving Masters champion Scottie Scheffler. The world number one golfer found himself in handcuffs after a traffic misunderstanding led to an altercation with a police officer.
Scheffler, who was five shots off the lead with a scheduled tee time of 10:08 am ET, was attempting to enter the course when he inadvertently drove past a police officer, resulting in his detention. ESPN reported that Scheffler was later charged with assault of a police officer among other counts. A mug shot broadcasted on ESPN TV showed Scheffler in an orange jumpsuit, a stark contrast to his usual golf attire. Despite the setback, Scheffler was released and has since arrived at Valhalla, ready to continue his pursuit of the championship.
Meanwhile, the tournament’s early starters, including Olympic champion Xander Schauffele, who tied the major championship record with a nine-under-par 62 in the opening round, ventured out under light rain. Schauffele, who is seeking his first major win, is set to tee off later in the afternoon.
Other notable players such as Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka are within striking distance of the lead, with McIlroy aiming for his first major in a decade and Koepka looking to repeat his 2019 victory. Tiger Woods, who had a challenging first round, is also slated for an afternoon tee time and will need to rally to make the cut after finishing last month’s Masters last among those who played through the weekend.
