Diplomatic Missions Advocate for LGBTQI+ Rights in Cyprus

Advancing LGBTQ+ Rights: Diplomatic Missions in Cyprus Unite

In an unprecedented show of solidarity, 26 diplomatic missions in Cyprus have come together to issue a powerful statement in support of LGBTQI+ rights. This collective voice marks a significant moment ahead of Pride Month and the 2024 International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia.

The statement underscores a commitment to human rights, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding these rights for all individuals, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The diplomatic missions lauded Cyprus for its progress in recognizing and protecting the rights of LGBTQI+ persons, particularly highlighting the recent legislation that outlaws conversion therapies.

Further recommendations were made by the diplomatic corps, urging Cyprus to consider legislative amendments that would allow same-sex couples in civil unions the right to adopt. They also expressed hope for advancements on bills concerning legal gender identity recognition and the acknowledgment of same-sex marriages performed abroad.

Despite the progress, the statement pointed out that there is still a long road ahead. It noted that 66 countries continue to criminalize same-sex relations, with ten imposing the death penalty. The statement paid homage to local organizations like Accept – LGBTI Cyprus and Queer Cyprus for their tireless efforts in advocating for LGBTQI+ rights.

The role of the business community was also highlighted, stressing the importance of creating inclusive workplaces that support LGBTQI+ employees and base employment on merit alone. The signatories called upon businesses to contribute to a world where dignity and respect are afforded to everyone.

The declaration was signed by a diverse group of nations including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cuba, Denmark, Estonia, France, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, the US, UK, the EU Representation, and the Office of the European Parliament. This represents over half of the diplomatic missions currently operating in Cyprus.

With this joint declaration, the international community in Cyprus has sent a clear message that the fight for equality and the protection of human rights remains a top priority on their agenda.

LGBTQ+ rights
As of my last update, Cyprus allows single LGBTQ+ individuals to adopt, but there is no legal provision for same-sex couples to do so, reflecting partial progress in LGBTQ+ adoption rights.

Can Cyprus enhance LGBTQ+ rights by recognizing foreign same-sex marriages?
