Cyprus Sees Dip in Tourist Arrivals and Resident Overseas Travel

Fluctuations in Tourist Arrivals and Overseas Travel for Cyprus Residents

Recent figures released by the Statistical Service Cystat have revealed a slight decrease in tourist arrivals to Cyprus this April, with numbers falling by 2.7% to 333,563 from 342,736 in the same month last year. This data was gathered through the monthly passenger survey conducted at both Larnaca and Paphos airports, as well as the ports.

Despite the dip in tourist arrivals during January and April, the year witnessed an overall increase in the first four months. A year-on-year rise in February and March boosted the total number of arrivals to 748,814, up from 736,629 in the previous year, marking a 1.7% increase.

The United Kingdom continues to lead as the primary source of tourists, with Britons comprising 35.3% of total arrivals (117,902). They are followed by visitors from Israel (10.7% or 35,673), Poland (7.6% or 25,250), Germany (6.7% or 22,510), and Greece (3.9% or 13,056).

Leisure remains the predominant reason for visiting Cyprus, with a significant 82.1% of tourists in April citing “holidays” as their purpose. This is a slight increase from April 2023, where 79.3% traveled for holidays. Additionally, 9.4% visited friends and relatives, while business accounted for 8.3% of the visits.

Conversely, Cyprus residents have shown a marginal decline in overseas travel, with numbers decreasing by 2.1% to 132,806 this April from 135,659 in the previous year. The preferred destinations for Cypriots were Greece (35.7%), the United Kingdom (9.6%), and Italy (6.0%).

The motivations behind overseas travel for Cyprus residents were predominantly for holidays (61.1%), followed by business (22.1%), studies (15.4%), and other reasons (1.4%).

This ebb and flow in travel patterns reflect a dynamic tourism sector that continues to be a vital part of Cyprus’s economy, with fluctuations influenced by various factors including market trends and global economic conditions.

The 2.7% decline in Cyprus tourist arrivals in April was likely due to a combination of off-peak seasonality, economic uncertainties in key markets, and competitive destinations attracting travelers.
