New Voting Service Guides Electors to Ballot Sites for June Elections

Enhanced Voting Service Launched Ahead of Elections

In a significant update to the electoral process, the Elections Receiver, Dr Elikkos Elia, has unveiled a new online tool designed to streamline the voting experience for the upcoming Europarliament and local administration elections on June 9. This innovative “where do I vote” function is now live on the official elections portal, www.elections.gov.cy, offering multilingual support in Greek, English, and Turkish.

The portal’s latest feature enables voters to determine their specific voting centre and the exact location of their polling booth. This complements the previously launched “what do I vote” function, which informs voters about the appropriate ballot papers they will receive based on their identity card number and date of birth. Urban voters will be provided with six different ballot papers, while rural voters will have four, tailored to their respective local governance structures.

A total of 706,534 registered voters will have the opportunity to choose from an extensive slate of 7,280 candidates competing for 3,227 positions. The electoral list also includes European citizens residing in Cyprus, with 21,640 eligible to vote in local administration elections and 13,017 in Europarliament elections. Additionally, Cypriots living abroad have the option to vote for MEPs at designated overseas polling stations.

Voting in Cyprus commences at 7 a.m., with a midday break, and resumes until 6 p.m. Voters are reminded to bring their voter ID card or identity card, with EU citizens able to present alternative registration documents. The process of casting a vote is designed to be swift and confidential, with Dr Elia estimating that it should take no more than five minutes from entering the election centre to casting votes.

Importantly, cross-voting among different political parties is prohibited. To assist voters, each category of ballot papers is distinguished by color: blue for MEPs, purple for district organisation presidents, yellow for mayors, and so forth. This color-coding system simplifies the process for voters as they make their selections in the privacy of the voting booth.

The introduction of this voting service marks a significant step towards enhancing voter accessibility and efficiency in Cyprus’s electoral process. With detailed information now at their fingertips, voters can approach the polls with confidence and clarity.
