Tragedy Strikes Tourists in Afghanistan’s Bamyan Province
In a harrowing incident, three Spanish tourists lost their lives and at least one other Spaniard was wounded during an attack by unidentified gunmen in the historically rich region of Bamyan, Afghanistan. The Spanish foreign ministry confirmed the deaths on Friday, marking a dark day for international tourism in the country.
The Taliban’s interior ministry spokesman, Abdul Mateen Qaniee, initially reported the casualties, stating that three foreign tourists and an Afghan citizen had been killed. The assault also left four foreign nationals and three Afghans injured. In the aftermath, authorities have detained four suspects in connection with the shooting.
Spain’s consular emergency unit has been activated to provide full support to the victims and their families during this difficult time. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his deep sorrow over the incident on a social messaging platform, conveying his shock at the violent loss of Spanish lives in Afghanistan. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
The province of Bamyan, known for its UNESCO world heritage site and the remnants of two colossal Buddha statues destroyed by the Taliban in 2001, has been trying to revive its tourism sector. The Taliban, since their return to power in 2021, have pledged to bolster security and have been encouraging a modest influx of tourists to visit cultural landmarks such as the Buddha statues.
This recent attack, however, represents one of the most significant acts of violence against foreign nationals since the departure of international forces and the subsequent Taliban takeover. It follows a previous incident in 2022 when an attack claimed by the Islamic State left Chinese citizens injured at a Kabul hotel frequented by Chinese businessmen.
