Climate Activists Disrupt Munich Airport Operations
In an unexpected turn of events on a bustling holiday weekend, Munich airport was brought to a temporary standstill as climate activists infiltrated the airfield, leading to a brief closure. German police confirmed the arrest of eight individuals on Saturday following the incident.
The group of activists, associated with the climate organization Last Generation, made their way onto one of the runways, with six members taking the drastic measure of gluing themselves to the tarmac. A police spokesperson reported that the situation was swiftly managed and normal operations resumed with both runways cleared for incoming and outgoing flights.
Last Generation took to social media platform X to claim responsibility for the demonstration. The posts included images of the protestors holding banners on what seemed to be part of the airport’s runway or tarmac area. One post detailed, “A total of six people are sitting in two groups on different locations of the Munich airport.” A notable sign amongst the protestors declared: “Problem is the government, not our holiday”.
Attempts to reach the group for comments via call or email remained unanswered. The timing of this protest coincided with one of the peak travel times for the airport, which is a close second in terms of busyness to the Easter holidays, as noted by airport officials.
An airport spokesperson acknowledged that there had been a complete but brief shutdown of airport activities due to the protest. Although operations have recommenced, travelers were advised to anticipate delays as the airport worked through the backlog caused by the disruption.
