Spotlight on Latin-American Cinema in Nicosia
The vibrant tapestry of Latin-American culture is set to unfold on the silver screen in Nicosia, as the Iberoamerican Film Festival gears up for its second edition. This celebration of film artistry will bring a selection of cinematic gems from across the Atlantic, offering local audiences a taste of Iberoamerican storytelling.
Jointly organized by the embassies of Brazil, Cuba, Peru, Portugal, and Spain, alongside the Instituto Cervantes de Nicosia and The Friends of the Cinema Society, the festival promises five evenings filled with captivating film screenings. The University of Nicosia’s Cine Studio will be the venue where these stories come to life, starting from May 21st through to June 4th.
The opening night will feature the Brazilian animated feature ‘O Menino e o Mundo’ (The Boy and the World), a poignant tale of a young boy’s journey in search of his father. This coming-of-age adventure is not only a visual treat but also a narrative that resonates with viewers of all ages. The evening will commence at 8 pm, followed by a short cocktail reception.
Subsequent films include ‘Modello 77’, a gripping Spanish film inspired by a notorious prison break, and ‘Salgueiro Maia’, a Portuguese biopic celebrating a national hero of the Carnation Revolution. The festival will also present ‘La Pena Maxima’, a Peruvian drama set against the backdrop of the World Cup, and ‘Habanastation’, a Cuban story of friendship during International Workers’ Day celebrations.
Each film will be showcased in its original language, accompanied by English or Greek subtitles, starting at 8.30 pm. In an effort to make Latin-American cinema accessible to all, the organizers have made admission to all screenings complimentary.
