Tragic Collision on the Danube River
In a somber turn of events, two people were killed and five others were missing following what is believed to be a grave incident on the Danube River. Late Saturday night, a small motor boat and a cruise ship were suspected to have collided north of Budapest, leading to this unfortunate outcome.
According to Soma Csecsi, a spokesperson for the Budapest police, there were eight adults on the small motor boat when the suspected collision occurred. The alarm was raised after authorities encountered a man with a head injury near Veroce. “Police talked to the man and from his initial communication they drew the conclusion that he was probably the victim of some kind of boat accident,” Csecsi explained.
The investigation led to the retrieval of the damaged motor boat near a bridge on the outskirts of Budapest. Concurrently, a cruise ship was identified in the vicinity of the accident. “At the time of the accident a cruise ship was located in the area, which was stopped at the town of Komarom where police have determined that the ship is damaged on one side,” Csecsi said.
The cruise ship in question, reportedly the Swiss-based Heidelberg, was moored following the incident. Hungarian state media released images of the 109-metre-long vessel, though details regarding the number of passengers aboard and their nationalities have yet to be disclosed.
In response to this tragedy, police have initiated a criminal investigation aimed at uncovering the cause of the accident and determining if there is any criminal liability. The community awaits answers as rescue efforts continue and families hold out hope for the missing individuals.
