A New Summit for Fitness: Cyprus Team Sets Record at Mera Peak
In a remarkable display of endurance and strength, a mountaineering team from Cyprus has achieved a new Guinness World Record for the highest altitude fitness session ever held. The groundbreaking event unfolded on the summit of Mera Peak, soaring at 6,476 metres above sea level.
The team, led by Alexis Economides of Peak Condition and Peak World Adventures, included Trevor Jones, Evgenia Konstantinou, and four sherpa guides from Nepal. The group had undergone extensive training in Cyprus before heading to Nepal, where they acclimatized through a multi-day trek to the base of Mera Peak.
The fitness session, which took place on May 6, consisted of a series of squats, pushups, planks, and other exercises that lasted over 20 minutes. “Training at such a high altitude was incredibly challenging,” Economides shared. “But our team’s spirit and determination carried us through.”
Despite the thin air and the demanding nature of high-intensity workouts at such an elevation, the team persevered. “Standing on top of Mera Peak and working out at that altitude was an experience unlike any other, it was surreal,” said Jones. Constantinou added that the achievement transcended physical fitness, symbolizing the power of teamwork and commitment.
Their descent was temporarily halted due to adverse weather conditions, but after a harrowing three-day wait, the team made it down safely. They left behind a flag in memory of a former sherpa guide who tragically lost his life to altitude sickness on Mera Peak.
The team’s efforts were supported by sponsors including Trutek, Bitramp Technologies, Stratus, AWOL, Peak Condition, Peak World Adventures, and Castle Auctions. Looking to the future, Economides and his team are determined to continue exploring extreme altitudes and pushing the boundaries of physical endurance. “We aim to promote physical health and resilience through unique and inspiring events,” he concluded.
