Excitement Builds as Cricket Tournament Progresses
The cricketing community witnessed an exhilarating weekend as the group stages of both the 40 Over and T20 leagues concluded, paving the way for the much-anticipated knockout stages. Limassol Zalmi’s valiant efforts were the talk of the town as they won two T20 games in a single day, equalling the points of Markhor and Royal in their group. However, they narrowly missed out on qualification due to a slightly inferior net run rate compared to Markhor, who secured their spot as runners-up to Al Fatah in Group D.
The heroics of Salman, who scored a blistering 75 off 29 balls, and Nveed’s supportive 41, were instrumental in Zalmi’s chase of Markhor’s 177-6. Their partnership for the 7th wicket was a spectacle to behold. Despite their efforts, including Salman’s unbeaten 96 from 33 balls in the subsequent match against Nicosia Fighters, Zalmi couldn’t quite elevate their run rate to advance.
In Group B, MSN Punjab Lions and Moufflons emerged victorious, surpassing Sri Lanka Lions to claim their quarter-final berths. The Lions showcased a dominant performance against Kipro Tigers with Vansham and Tiwari decimating the opposition’s batting lineup.
The competition remained fierce across the groups, with Nicosia Tigers, Amdocs, and Telugu 11 all finishing on equal points in Group A. Group C saw Lankan SC leading undefeated, while Group D presented a tight finish with Al Fatah at the top.
The quarter-final draw has set the stage for enthralling encounters, keeping group winners separate:
- Nicosia Tigers v Black Caps
- Lankan SC v Amdocs
- Al Fatah v Moufflons
- MSN Punjab Lions v Markhor
In the 40 Over league, Sri Lanka Lions secured their runner-up position in Group 1 with a commanding win over Akrotiri. Kavindu’s century was a standout performance, while Kamal’s bowling proved too much for Akrotiri. Meanwhile, Moufflons confirmed their dominance in Group 2 with a clinical victory over Telugu 11.
The semi-finals for the 40 Over league are now set:
- Markhor v Everest
- Moufflons v Sri Lanka Lions
With the group stages behind us and the knockout rounds ahead, fans are bracing for more thrilling cricket action in the days to come.
