Limassol Court Acquits Driver in Pedestrian Death Case
In a closely watched case, the Limassol District Court has delivered a verdict on the tragic incident that occurred on October 1, 2019, involving the death of school inspector Petros Petrou, aged 62. The victim was struck by the defendant’s vehicle while crossing a street, specifically April 1 Street in the Agia Fyla area of Limassol. The case has drawn significant attention due to the circumstances surrounding the accident.
During the proceedings, the court took into consideration several contributing factors that led to the unfortunate event. It was noted that the area suffered from
Judge Kyriakos Georgiou, presiding over the case, concluded that the accident was unavoidable. The court found that the 41-year-old driver was not at fault as he adhered to the speed limit and stayed within his lane. His driving behavior did not suggest any form of recklessness. Expert witnesses provided testimony and calculations indicating that the driver had a mere 2 seconds to react to Petrou’s presence on the road. They argued that even with an immediate response, the collision could not have been prevented due to the vehicle’s stopping distance.
Since the incident, road improvements have been made to April 1 Street. The court’s decision made a point to acknowledge the installation of new lighting fixtures and a median designed to enhance pedestrian safety.
While the driver has been acquitted, it remains within the rights of Petrou’s family to appeal the decision. The case has underscored the importance of road safety and the impact of environmental factors on traffic accidents.
