Challenges in Paphos-Polis Chrysochous Road Construction
The rate of progress on the under-construction road linking Paphos and Polis Chrysochous has raised concerns, with local commerce leaders urging for swift resolution to ongoing issues. George Mais, chairman of the Paphos chamber of commerce, emphasized the project’s significance, stating that further delays are untenable.
Mais has called for earnest discussions between the contractor and Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades to resolve disputes that have emerged. The road construction has encountered setbacks such as sourcing appropriate materials for embankments and storing them adequately. Last month, it was revealed that a significant portion of the materials failed to meet the necessary standards.
The project initially required a vast amount of soil movement, but only a fraction of the excavated soil has been suitable for use. This scarcity of materials threatens to extend the project timeline significantly, potentially leading to a tenfold increase in duration.
During a recent visit by the House transport committee, it was projected that the first phase would conclude by year’s end. However, Mais expressed skepticism about this timeline, noting that only 30% of the work is complete. The contractor has requested an additional 33 months to finish the project, a proposal currently under review.
Mais criticized the substantial financial demands placed by the contractor and other issues stalling progress. He also urged Minister Vafeades to promptly initiate the second phase of the project, which could expedite the overall construction process by dividing it into two phases.
The completion of this vital infrastructure is crucial for the development and connectivity of the region, and stakeholders are keenly awaiting a resolution that will put the project back on track.
