President Stresses Need to Review Health, Education Procedures for Future

President Christodoulides recently addressed the conditions at Troodos Hospital, acknowledging the need for presidential intervention to replace basic amenities. When questioned by a journalist about the necessity for presidential involvement in replacing a bed, two toilets, and an oven at the Troodos Regional Hospital, President Christodoulides expressed his regret.

“I am ashamed that such intervention was required and that it is often necessary,” he said. “These are the procedures that need to change, especially in sectors as vital as Health and Education. There should be no need for such interventions, but unfortunately, they were necessary. I am focused on the outcome, which is what matters to me at this stage, but more broadly, as a state, we must review all these procedures.”

Emphasizing Accountability and Future Prevention

He emphasized that the state and successive governments act as trustees of the Cypriot people and must prioritize their interests. “There should be no need for such interventions, not just regarding the hospital but also in other critical cases. For such interventions to be necessary, there are underlying issues that need to be resolved,” he added.

In response to a question about seeking accountability for delays in the health sector, President Christodoulides affirmed the importance of addressing responsibilities across all sectors. “Certainly, there are responsibilities in all sectors, and responsibilities must be investigated. But my primary concern is not just to assign blame; what matters is the result, getting things done, delivering on our promises and declarations. These are what count, and this is where I am focused, without neglecting the issue of responsibility in any way whatsoever,” he stated.

He emphasized the importance of reviewing procedures in vital sectors like Health and Education to prevent such interventions in the future. This approach aims to ensure that the state can provide essential services without requiring high-level interventions.

President Christodoulides’ remarks underscore a commitment to improving procedural efficiency and accountability within critical public sectors. As he continues to focus on outcomes and delivering on promises, his administration aims to build a more responsive and effective governance framework that minimizes the need for emergency interventions.
