The Cat Protection and Welfare Association (P.A.W.S.) is urging authorities to take action against an individual accused of neglecting cats held in cages for months in Strovolos. P.A.W.S. president Dinos Agiomamitis alleges the cats, including three who gave birth in captivity, are suffering due to prolonged confinement. He claims stress caused the mothers to kill and eat their kittens.
Allegations of Neglect
Agiomamitis accuses relevant bodies, including the police and veterinary services, of failing to intervene despite repeated complaints. The initial report, filed several months ago, addressed concerns about the cats’ captivity and the owner’s refusal to spay them. The report details the poor conditions the cats endure, including exposure to harsh weather. During heavy rain, the cages flooded, forcing the cats to climb the bars to avoid drowning. A volunteer rescued them, but the owner reportedly recaptured them later.
Legal Actions and Requests
P.A.W.S is requesting the Attorney General prosecute the individual for animal cruelty, citing the deaths of kittens and the ongoing confinement in violation of animal welfare laws. Strovolos Municipality has already filed charges against the owner for constructing illegal structures to house the cats. The next court hearing is scheduled for May 24.
Living Conditions
The accused reportedly lives away from the location and feeds the cats wet bread twice a week. The dire conditions and inadequate feeding regimen have raised significant concerns among animal welfare advocates. P.A.W.S. continues to push for immediate intervention to prevent further suffering of these caged cats.
