The total weight of goods transported by road in Cyprus saw a significant rise of 11.4% in the last quarter of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022. This increase brought the volume up from 9.09 million tonnes to 10.13 million tonnes, as revealed by the quarterly road freight transport survey conducted by the Statistical Service Cystat.
Additionally, the weight of freight transported to and from Cyprus also experienced an uptick of 8.5% in the last quarter, growing from 8,600 tonnes to 9,300 tonnes. This upward trend was not limited to the final quarter alone but extended throughout the entire year.
Annual Growth in Road Freight
For the whole of 2023, the total weight of goods transported by road in Cyprus increased by 5.6% compared to 2022, rising from 38.52 million tonnes to 40.66 million tonnes. The weight of freight transported from and to Cyprus also saw a notable increase of 15.8% year-on-year, climbing from 32,800 tonnes to 38,000 tonnes.
However, when examining the tonne-kilometre measure (tkm), which is a more detailed metric of freight transport efficiency, local road freight decreased by 2.8% in the final quarter of last year, dropping from 236.9 million tkm to 230.3 million tkm. Despite this quarterly decline, the overall annual figure for tonne-kilometres rose from 923 million tkm in 2022 to 986 million tkm in 2023, marking a growth of 6.8%.
With these figures in mind, businesses and logistics companies may find it beneficial to utilize tools such as a road tax calculator or a car tax calculator to better manage their expenses and optimize their operations amid increasing freight volumes.
The consistent growth in road freight transport highlights the dynamic nature of Cyprus’s logistics sector and underscores the importance of efficient transport management solutions.
