Fire Trucks and Aircraft Battle Limassol Blaze, Evacuations Underway

Thirteen fire trucks were battling a massive blaze in Limassol’s Paramali village on Friday afternoon, while numerous firefighting aircraft were deployed to the area. The British bases have urged drivers to avoid the Paphos highway for safety reasons, and 17 monks at the Ayios Georgiou monastery in Sotira village were evacuated as flames approached the area as a precautionary measure.

Heightened Concerns Due to Strong Winds

Strong winds in the region have intensified concerns that residential homes might be at risk, potentially necessitating further evacuations. The fire services deployed four fire trucks, with additional support coming from three forestry department vehicles, three from the British bases, and three from Support CY. Civil defence has been put on high alert.

To bolster ground efforts, firefighting vehicles from Larnaca and Pafos were dispatched to the scene by 6pm. In the air, two helicopters from Jordan, along with one helicopter each from the national guard, police, British bases, and forestry department, are working tirelessly to combat the flames.

The coordinated efforts of firefighters on the ground and in the air are crucial in containing the fire and preventing further damage. The situation remains fluid, with authorities closely monitoring wind conditions and potential threats to populated areas.

Firefighters coordinate efforts through a centralized command structure, utilizing incident command systems (ICS). This ensures clear communication, task allocation, and resource management. Each unit receives specific roles, and real-time updates are shared via radios and digital tools to maintain efficiency.
