Church Statute and Ecclesiastical Trial Address Monastery Scandal

May 26, 2024

In a serene yet scandalous turn of events, the Osiou Avakoum monastery finds itself at the heart of an ecclesiastical trial that has captivated both the devout and the curious. Archbishop Georgios assured the public on Sunday that all proceedings are in strict accordance with the Church statute, emphasizing that everything is legal and above board.

Ecclesiastical Trial to Proceed Normally

Speaking at the inauguration of the Nikos Mougiaris hall in Athienou, Archbishop Georgios reiterated, “The statute of the Church of Cyprus clearly states what are the rights and powers of the Holy Synod and how an ecclesiastical trial is conducted.” He further stressed, “The trial will take place normally.”

Addressing concerns about potential biases, he cautioned, “Do not mislead those who think that in this way they will give for or against one of the groups involved.”

Scandal and Allegations

The scandal erupted when lawyers for the monks embroiled in the controversy claimed on Friday that the investigative committee’s procedures were illegal. The accusations against monks Nektarios and Porfirios are particularly grave. They were allegedly found with €800,000 in cash and property holdings in Greece and Limassol. More shockingly, CCTV footage purportedly captured them engaging in sexual acts with each other.

Adding to the monastery’s woes, another video surfaced showing a monk physically assaulting a woman who worked as a cleaner at the monastery. These revelations have sent ripples through the religious community.

The monks have staunchly denied all charges, asserting that the accusations are part of a larger conspiracy against them. In a heartfelt Facebook post last month, Nektarios expressed that while the developments have “shaken his soul,” they have not diminished his faith in God.

As the ecclesiastical trial unfolds, all eyes will be on the Holy Synod to see how they navigate this intricate web of allegations and maintain the sanctity of their Church statute.

The Archbishop highlighted that the events at the Osiou Avakoum monastery adhered strictly to church statutes and legal frameworks. These included religious ceremonies, community outreach programs, and educational workshops aimed at fostering spiritual growth and community cohesion.

Can the monastery continue its regular activities during the trial?
