Dance Festival Highlights Themes of Togetherness and Connection

The Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival returns with a rich programme featuring seven unique performances at the Rialto Theatre. Among these, “The End – part 2” by choreographer Arno Schuitemaker stands out as a compelling exploration of human connection.

The End – part 2: A Journey to Extremes

Scheduled for June 4th at 20:30, “The End – part 2” takes audiences on an intense journey. This 60-minute performance combines movement, electronic music, light, and video to create a world of shifting relationships. The performance explores themes of togetherness, connection, and solidarity, blurring the line between seeing and being seen. Schuitemaker’s work is known for its hyperphysical nature, making an overwhelming impression with inventive forms that merge the intimate and the universal.

The performance feels like a collection of short stories where energy, stillness, sensitivity, distortion, and longing confront each other. The three performers—Ivan Ugrin, Mark Christoph Klee, and Angelo Petracca—expose different sides of themselves, ultimately lifting physical boundaries. Even in opposition, individual spaces can be shared, creating a profound sense of mutual transparency and interaction.

“The End – part 2” is a production by SHARP/Arno Schuitemaker in co-production with La Place de la Danse – CDCN Toulouse/Occitanie, CCN de Caen and Normandie, and Montpellier Danse. It is supported by Performing Arts Fund NL, Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, Ammodo, and Fonds 21.

Arno Schuitemaker is celebrated for breaking the boundaries between dance, performance, visual art, and club culture. His previous work, “30 Appearances Out of Darkness,” premiered at the Holland Festival and was hailed as a “must-see of the year” by Scènes. Another notable work, “The way you sound tonight,” won the Swan award for the most impressive dance production of the season. Schuitemaker’s performances have graced renowned stages in over 30 countries.

The creative team behind “The End – part 2” includes dramaturgy by Guy Cools, video by Gilbert Nouno, lighting design by Jean Kalman, music by Aart Strootman, stage design by Jean Kalman and Arno Schuitemaker, costumes by Victor Klijsen, and technical production by Maarten van Burken. The video technician is Daan Hazendonk, with technicians Sander Schaart and Ruben Lijbers. Miguel A Melgares serves as the outside eye, and the publicity image is by Lonneke van de Palen.

Tickets are priced at €8 (€30 for all performances). E-tickets can be purchased at www.rialto.com.cy or through the box office at 77 77 77 45 (Monday – Friday 10:00 – 15:00).
