Two men, aged 46 and 35, were remanded in custody today by the Larnaca District Court and directly committed for trial on July 1 in connection with a massive weapons cache unearthed in an Oroklini cemetery on May 20. The defendants face serious charges related to possessing explosives and firearms without a license, including conspiracy to commit a felony, transporting and possessing explosives without a license, and similar offences related to firearms and ammunition.
Uncovering the Cache
Police allege the cache, believed to be one of the largest ever found in Cyprus, may be linked to underworld figures and planned assassinations. Authorities apprehended the 46-year-old suspect leaving the cemetery with a bag containing a hunting rifle, ammunition, and a pistol. A subsequent search of the grave revealed a military-grade arsenal, including an anti-tank launcher, missiles, explosives – one rigged for detonation via mobile phone – and a silenced pistol.
Awaiting Forensic Results
Police are awaiting forensic results to determine if the weapons were used in past crimes and to identify any potential accomplices through fingerprints or DNA evidence. The court rejected bail for both suspects, who will be transferred to Central Prisons to await trial.
The discovery of this weapons cache has sent ripples through the community, raising concerns about the extent of criminal activities linked to underworld figures. As authorities continue their investigation, the forensic results will play a crucial role in unraveling the full scope of this case.
