The #Women4Mediterranean conference will open on Thursday in Nicosia to discuss the financial strengthening of women, gender equality, climate change, violence against women, and media issues. This significant gathering serves as a platform to discuss and approve the 2024-2025 roadmap, a strategic initiative aiming at implementing the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) ministerial declaration for enhancing the role of women in society.
Strategic Roadmap for 2024-2025
The conference is organised by the UfM and the gender equality commissioner’s office, with delegates including ministers, government officials, and members of organisations. The roadmap is expected to outline actionable steps and measurable goals to ensure that the ministerial declaration translates into tangible benefits for women across the Mediterranean region.
Key figures such as UfM general secretary Naser Kamel, Interior Minister Constantinos Kombos, and gender equality commissioner Josie Christodoulou will be addressing the opening. Their speeches are anticipated to set the tone for the conference, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving gender equality and addressing climate change.
Focus Areas
The conference will delve into several critical areas:
- Financial Strengthening of Women: Discussions will focus on creating economic opportunities and removing barriers that hinder women’s financial independence.
- Gender Equality: Strategies to promote equal rights and opportunities for all genders will be explored.
- Climate Change: The impact of climate change on women and how gender-sensitive policies can mitigate these effects will be a key topic.
- Violence Against Women: Measures to combat violence and provide support to victims will be discussed.
- Media Issues: The role of media in shaping perceptions and promoting gender equality will be examined.
This conference represents a crucial step towards a more equitable future, where the financial strengthening of women and gender equality are not just ideals but realities. By addressing these issues collectively, the UfM aims to create a more inclusive society that can better withstand the challenges posed by climate change and other global issues.
