Firefighters in Limassol battled two separate blazes Friday afternoon, grappling with strong winds and dry vegetation.
Agios Sylas Blaze
The larger fire erupted in dry grass and wild vegetation in the Agios Sylas area. Firefighters deployed four engines and three aircraft to combat the blaze – one from the Department of Forests and two from Jordan. The larger fire required four engines and three aircraft to combat, while strong winds hindered containment efforts, causing thick smoke to engulf parts of Limassol.
Choirokitia Incident
Simultaneously, a fire broke out in a reed bed, dry grass, and wild vegetation in Choirokitia. According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, reinforcements were dispatched to bolster firefighting efforts at both locations. In total, ten fire engines from various districts, two from the Department of Forests, additional specialised vehicles, and firefighting teams responded to the emergencies.
The firefighters’ swift response and coordinated efforts were crucial in managing the situation. Despite the challenges posed by strong winds and dry conditions, their dedication ensured that the fires were contained as quickly as possible.
