Fire services chief Nikos Longinos on Saturday confirmed that the fires which erupted in Limassol’s Ayios Sylas and Ayios Therapondas were unequivocally the result of an arson attack. The first blaze in Ayios Sylas ignited at 4pm on Friday, scorching approximately five square kilometres of land.
“The location where the fire started could not have been accidental, not even with a cigarette stub. It is clear someone wanted the fire to spread and destroy, and they did it,” Longinos told CNA.
Impact on Local Businesses
Two small businesses were reduced to ashes in the area – a woodcutting shop and a neighboring factory that stored wooden pallets. The devastation has left the local community reeling, as these businesses were integral parts of the local economy.
Second Arson Attack
Longinos revealed that the fire which broke out in Ayios Therapondas on Friday evening was also an arson attack. “We are worried and are in touch with police and state authorities. Measures to deal with the situation have already been decided on,” he added, without delving into specifics.
Challenges Faced by Fire Services
The strong winds exacerbated the already arduous battle against the flames. “Our goal was to protect homes and save lives, and we did it. We also managed to stop the fire from moving towards Palodia,” Longinos stated. Fire services will remain vigilant in the area near Ayios Sylas to handle any potential reignitions.
Collaborative Efforts
On Friday, three aircraft were deployed to join the firefighting efforts – two helicopters from Jordan and one forestry department aircraft. Additionally, 10 fire trucks were on the scene, some of which had been dispatched from Larnaca, Paphos, and Nicosia. Roads were temporarily closed for safety reasons, ensuring that emergency services could operate without hindrance.
The coordinated response highlights the resilience and determination of the fire services and local authorities in tackling these deliberate fires. As investigations continue, the community remains hopeful that those responsible for these malicious acts will be brought to justice.
