Green Kiosks to Enhance Recycling in Rural Cyprus
In a significant move to bolster environmental sustainability, the Cypriot environment department has unveiled plans to establish 50 innovative ‘green kiosks’ across rural regions, stretching from Nicosia to Famagusta. This initiative, which is part of a 25-month project, aims to elevate recycling practices in less urbanized areas.
The contract, valued at €3,274,000, has been awarded to Mesogeios Digital for the execution of the project aptly named Green Pavilion. The project’s blueprint, crafted by experts from the National Technical University of Athens, envisions these kiosks as compact recyclable material sorting centres. Their design is tailored to accommodate a variety of recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metal. In an effort to promote a circular economy, residents will also have the opportunity to deposit reusable items like clothing, footwear, toys, CDs, and books.
The introduction of these green kiosks is expected to make recycling more accessible and convenient for rural communities, thereby encouraging greater participation in environmental conservation efforts. With the project’s completion targeted for the first half of 2026, these kiosks are set to become a cornerstone in Cyprus’s commitment to a greener future.
