New Era of Energy: Turkey to Connect with Northern Cyprus via Electricity Cable
In a significant development that promises to strengthen ties and foster growth, Turkish Cypriot Leader Ersin Tatar announced the commencement of a project that will see the construction of an electricity cable linking Turkey and Northern Cyprus. Speaking at an Iftar meal in Istanbul, Tatar hailed the initiative as the dawn of a “new era.”
The event, hosted by Turkey’s Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, was attended by a host of dignitaries including Turkey’s ambassador in Nicosia Metin Feyzioglu, the north’s ‘prime minister’ Unal Ustel, and leaders of the ruling coalition parties in the north. The gathering also saw the presence of Murat Kurum, the Ak Parti’s candidate for the upcoming Istanbul mayoral election.
Tatar emphasized the transformative impact of Turkey’s support, which has already manifested through the completion of a water pipeline in 2020 and substantial investments in infrastructure and communication. He expressed his commitment to building a future for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) that its citizens can be proud of.
Yilmaz, in his address, underscored the deep historical connections between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots. He highlighted the collaborative efforts in various sectors such as transportation, energy, agriculture, and tourism. The Vice President also mentioned the ongoing construction of new governmental buildings in Ayios Dhometios, with expectations set for their completion by November.
Both leaders praised Murat Kurum for his contributions, particularly in relation to the opening of Varosha during his tenure as Turkey’s environment minister. Yilmaz also touched upon Istanbul’s need for investment, expressing confidence in Kurum’s ability to revitalize the city as he prepares to run against incumbent mayor Ekrem Imamoglu in the local elections on March 31.
The announcement of the electricity cable project and its accompanying feasibility studies mark a significant milestone in the relationship between Turkey and Northern Cyprus, promising enhanced cooperation and shared prosperity for both regions.
