Revised Naturalization Qualifications Announced
The Ministry of Interior has recently made an announcement regarding the acceptance and scrutiny of naturalization applications, in line with the updated Population Registry (Amendment) Law of 2023. Prospective applicants are advised to ensure they meet the comprehensive qualifications outlined in Article 111B(1) of the law before submitting their applications.
Key criteria for eligibility include a legal and continuous residence in the Republic for 12 months prior to the application date, with short absences totaling no more than 90 days within this period not affecting eligibility. Additionally, applicants must have resided legally for at least 7 years within the last decade. Other essential qualifications encompass good character, proficiency in the Greek language at level B1, and a sound understanding of the Republic’s modern political and social landscape. Applicants must also demonstrate they have suitable accommodation and stable financial resources to support themselves and their family members, along with an intention to reside in the Republic.
For high-skilled employees and their families, as per Article 111B(2), the qualifications are slightly different. These individuals must have resided legally for 12 months before applying, with a cumulative legal residence of 4 or 3 years within the preceding decade, depending on their Greek language proficiency at levels A2 or B1 respectively. The same conditions for good character, knowledge of the Republic’s societal context, adequate accommodation, financial stability, and residency intentions apply.
Businesses that fall under the special provisions include foreign companies with autonomous offices in Cyprus, Cypriot shipping companies, high-tech and innovation firms, pharmaceuticals, biogenetics, biotechnology entities, and those registered in the Foreign Companies Registry of the Population and Immigration Department.
