Famagusta Police Chief Cries Conspiracy Amidst Fake Diploma Scandal
In a recent turn of events, Baris Sel, the Famagusta police chief, has vehemently claimed that his arrest is the result of a conspiracy. Facing charges in the high-profile “fake diploma scandal,” Sel defended himself passionately in court, stating that his lengthy and dedicated service of 27 years is being unfairly tarnished.
During his emotional court appearance, Sel accused the north’s chief of police, Kasim Kuni, of orchestrating a plot against him. His arrest is linked to allegations of having fraudulently obtained a master’s degree from Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University (KSTU), a school now notorious for its involvement in the scandal. Despite the accusations, Sel maintains his innocence, asserting that he submitted a legitimate thesis to KSTU’s general secretary.
The scandal has ensnared several other individuals, including a lieutenant colonel from the ‘TRNC security forces command,’ who was recently released on bail after being charged with possessing a forged doctorate from KSTU. Additionally, a captain from the same command has been taken into custody, and two relatives of Ersin Tatar’s bodyguard, Serif Avcil, are under remand for their involvement.
The case took another peculiar turn when Avcil, who was arrested last week, claimed to have “lost his phone on the way to the police station” after being summoned for questioning. The phone, requested by police as evidence, was purportedly misplaced by Avcil under mysterious circumstances.
The unfolding drama of the fake diploma scandal continues to grip the north as high-ranking officials and employees find themselves embroiled in accusations of academic fraud. The investigation is ongoing, with the court proceedings shedding light on the intricate web of deceit that has cast a shadow over the region’s educational and law enforcement institutions.
