Cyprus’ Migration Strategy Earns European Commission’s Praise
The European Commission has recently acknowledged the strides made by Cyprus in managing its migration policies. Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou expressed his contentment with the validation from the Commission, particularly from vice president Margaritis Schinas, who lauded Cyprus as a leading example in the return of migrants to their countries of origin.
Ioannou’s remarks were in response to an interview with Schinas published by Politis, where the vice president highlighted Cyprus’ significant progress. Schinas’ commendation was not only a nod to the country’s current practices but also a signal that Cyprus’ efforts are being noticed at the highest levels of European governance.
The vice president’s assertion that Cyprus is now on “much more stable footing” when it comes to immigration management underscores the effectiveness of the policies implemented under the Christodoulides government over the past year. This statement, according to Ioannou, is a testament to the country’s hard work and serves as an honor to Cyprus, validating its diligent efforts in this challenging area.
Despite the praise, Ioannou was quick to emphasize that the government is not resting on its laurels. He acknowledged that immigration is a persistent and complex issue, subject to change due to external factors. The minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to further enhancing immigration management and expressed gratitude for the European Union’s ongoing support.
Looking ahead, Ioannou anticipates continued decisive assistance from the EU, especially regarding the re-evaluation of the regime of Syria—a matter that has been actively pursued by the Republic of Cyprus since the previous summer.
