Strengthening Regional Energy Ties
In a significant move to bolster regional energy cooperation, Cyprus and Israel have set their sights on advancing joint energy projects, with the Great Sea Interconnector being earmarked as the primary focus for the current year. This development came to light following a meeting between Cyprus’ Energy Minister George Papanastasiou and his Israeli counterpart Eli Kohen in Tel Aviv.
The discussions, which took place amidst Papanastasiou’s official visit to Israel with senior ministry officials, highlighted the potential benefits of the interconnector. Kohen emphasized that by linking Israel’s electricity network to Europe via Cyprus, Israel’s strategic position would be reinforced, contributing to the nation’s energy autonomy and offering a solution to Europe’s quest for diversified energy sources during the ongoing energy crisis. The proposed submarine power cable also promises to provide Israel with a crucial backup from the European power grid in exigent circumstances.
Both ministers expressed their commitment to enhancing the regional alliance through energy sector collaborations. The Great Sea Interconnector, a submarine electric cable project designed to connect Israel and Cyprus and further extend to Europe, has been slated for accelerated progress. Additionally, Papanastasiou and Kohen deliberated on the Cyprus Gateway initiative, which aims to channel Israeli and regional natural gas through Cyprus to European markets.
The urgency of resolving the Aphrodite – Ishai natural gas field dispute was also underscored by both ministers, who are keen on expediting a solution. Their meeting included a visit to the Reading Power Station in Tel Aviv, where they explored the feasibility of establishing the underwater electricity link at that location.
Papanastasiou highlighted the shared vision between Cyprus and Israel for an Eastern Mediterranean energy landscape that fosters peace, stability, and prosperity. He pointed out that their productive dialogue focused on ensuring close coordination and the timely completion of the Great Sea Interconnector. The Cypriot minister also noted their resolve to swiftly reach an agreement on the Aphrodite – Ishai issue and to collaborate on developing natural gas resources within their respective Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs).
With an eye on diversifying sources and routes, Papanastasiou suggested that Cyprus could act as a natural gas gateway to European markets, reinforcing the East Med energy corridor that both nations are keenly working towards establishing.
