Strengthening Regional Energy Ties
In a significant move to bolster regional energy cooperation, Cyprus’ Energy Minister George Papanastasiou and his Israeli counterpart Eli Kohen have agreed to prioritize the development of the Great Sea Interconnector. This ambitious project aims to connect the electricity grids of Israel, Cyprus, and Greece, marking it as a top priority for the year.
The agreement was reached during Papanastasiou’s visit to Israel, which included high-level discussions with Kohen in Tel Aviv. The two ministers emphasized the strategic importance of the interconnector, not only for enhancing Israel’s regional standing but also for contributing to Europe’s energy diversification, especially during the current energy crisis. Kohen highlighted the additional benefit of securing backup from the European power grid in times of emergency.
During their meeting, Papanastasiou and Kohen also explored initiatives to develop natural gas transmission infrastructure within the Eastern Mediterranean. The Cyprus Gateway initiative was discussed as a means to transport Israeli and regional natural gas through Cyprus to European markets. The ministers underscored the urgency of resolving issues surrounding the Aphrodite – Ishai cross-border natural gas reservoir.
Their discussions extended beyond agreements as they toured Tel Aviv’s Reading Power Station with Yossi Dayan, Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Energy, and other industry professionals. The tour aimed to assess the feasibility of establishing the underwater electricity connection at the site.
Papanastasiou highlighted the shared vision between Cyprus and Israel for the Eastern Mediterranean, viewing energy as a catalyst for regional peace, stability, and prosperity. He stressed the importance of close coordination to ensure the timely completion of the Great Sea Interconnector. Furthermore, Papanastasiou reiterated their commitment to swiftly reaching an agreement on the Aphrodite – Ishai issue and to collaborate on developing natural gas resources within their respective Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs).
With an eye on creating a reliable East Med energy corridor, Cyprus could emerge as a crucial gateway for natural gas to European markets, thereby diversifying sources and routes. This collaboration between Cyprus and Israel underscores the growing importance of regional partnerships in addressing global energy challenges.
