Strengthening Regional Energy Ties
In a significant move towards bolstering regional energy cooperation, Cyprus’ Energy Minister George Papanastasiou and his Israeli counterpart Eli Kohen have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing joint energy projects. The spotlight is on the Great Sea Interconnector, a submarine power cable project aimed at connecting Israel’s electricity grid to Europe via Cyprus, which has been designated as a top priority for the current year.
The ministers convened in Tel Aviv amidst Papanastasiou’s official visit with Cypriot ministry officials. Cohen highlighted the strategic importance of the interconnector, stating that it not only strengthens Israel’s position in the region but also contributes to the nation’s energy independence. Moreover, it serves as a response to Europe’s call for diversified energy sources during the ongoing energy crisis. Cohen also emphasized the cable’s role in providing Israel with a backup from the European power grid during emergencies.
A joint press release post-meeting disclosed that the ministers had discussed various energy cooperation avenues, which present significant opportunities for both nations. They agreed to fortify their regional alliance and push forward with projects like the Great Sea Interconnector. Additionally, they explored initiatives for natural gas infrastructure development in the Eastern Mediterranean, including the Cyprus Gateway initiative, which aims to channel Israeli and regional natural gas through Cyprus to European markets.
Both Papanastasiou and Cohen acknowledged the urgency of resolving the Aphrodite – Ishai cross-border natural gas reservoir issue. Their meeting also included a tour of the Reading Power Station in Tel Aviv, where they evaluated potential sites for establishing the underwater electricity connection.
Papanastasiou underscored the shared vision of Cyprus and Israel for an Eastern Mediterranean that leverages energy as a catalyst for peace, stability, and prosperity. He stressed the importance of close coordination for the timely completion of the Great Sea Interconnector and expressed determination to swiftly reach an agreement on the Aphrodite – Ishai issue. The Cypriot minister also pointed out Cyprus’ potential role as a natural gas gateway to Europe, contributing to a reliable East Med energy corridor that aims at diversifying sources and routes.
