Strengthening Regional Energy Ties
In a significant step towards deepening energy cooperation, Cyprus and Israel have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing joint energy projects. At the heart of this collaboration is the Great Sea Interconnector, a project that has been identified as a top priority for the year. This submarine power cable aims to connect Israel’s electricity network to Europe through Cyprus, enhancing regional energy security and independence.
The meeting in Tel Aviv between Cyprus’ Energy Minister George Papanastasiou and his Israeli counterpart Eli Kohen was not just a formal visit but a strategic dialogue aimed at reinforcing the regional alliance. Kohen emphasized the importance of the interconnector, stating that it not only strengthens Israel’s position in the region but also contributes to the European quest for diversified energy sources, especially in light of the current energy crisis.
During their discussions, Papanastasiou and Kohen also explored various initiatives for developing natural gas transmission infrastructure in the Eastern Mediterranean. One such initiative is the Cyprus Gateway, which is designed to transport Israeli and regional natural gas through Cyprus to European markets.
The ministers highlighted the urgency of resolving the Aphrodite – Ishai cross-border natural gas reservoir issue. They agreed on the need to swiftly move forward with solutions that would benefit both nations and bolster their energy sectors.
A tour of Tel Aviv’s Reading Power Station provided practical insights into the potential site for establishing the underwater electricity connection. The visit underscored the shared vision of Cyprus and Israel for an Eastern Mediterranean where energy serves as a catalyst for peace, stability, and prosperity.
Papanastasiou stressed the importance of close coordination to ensure the timely completion of the Great Sea Interconnector. He also highlighted Cyprus’ potential role as a natural gas gateway to Europe, contributing to a reliable East Med energy corridor that aims at diversifying sources and routes.
The meeting concluded with both ministers expressing a firm determination to reach an agreement on the Aphrodite – Ishai issue and to continue leveraging synergies in infrastructure development within their respective Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs).
