Western Australia is enduring an extreme heatwave, prompting concerns of increased bush fire risk in the expansive state, according to the nation’s weather forecaster. An “extreme heatwave warning” was issued Saturday for the remote regions of Pilbara and Gascoyne, with temperatures predicted to surge into the high forties degrees Celsius over the weekend. The extreme events are especially concerning in the Pilbara mining town of Paraburdoo, where a high of 47 degrees Celsius was forecast for Saturday, significantly exceeding the usual January maximum. This heatwave elevates the danger of bush fires during an already perilous fire season, aggravated by the El Nino weather pattern linked to extreme events like wildfires, cyclones, and droughts. This warning arises after firefighters tackled uncontrolled bush fires near Perth at the beginning of the month, prompting evacuations. The recent fire seasons have been relatively less destructive compared to the devastating 2019-2020 “Black Summer” bush fires.
