In a recent investigation, violations of the νόμος παρατεταμένη ορθοστασία, a law designed to control prolonged standing of workers, were uncovered. The revelations occurred during the holiday season at “P” markets, where cashiers were found working without chairs and not being provided with the prescribed frequency of breaks. The organizations can now face a fine of €500 as a result of these violations.
Despite having been into effect from December 20, 2023, this law, which is based on the guidelines by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU OSHA) surrounding workplace ergonomics, appears to have not been implemented in practice.
The legislation outlines the method to address and prevent issues related to prolonged standing in workplaces, a critical factor in promoting a healthier work environment and improving employee productivity. However, the successful εφαρμογή, or application of this law, seems to be an uphill task.
Stakeholders in various industries are being urged to comprehend and act in accordance with labor laws to enhance workplace ergonomics, thereby making workstations more worker-friendly, reducing worker fatigue, and ensuring higher levels of job satisfaction.
