A law proposed by MP Alexandra Attalidou, designed to curtail benefits received by five former Presidents of the Republic and of the Parliament, is under discussion today in the Parliament’s Institutions Committee. The benefits in question include lifetime use of a limousine, a police chauffeur and maintenance costs, alongside a monthly secretary allowance of €3,000. These perks have long generated controversy, with many party members and MPs resistant to open debate due to potential implications for party leaders. Through her proposed law, Attalidou aims to limit such benefits to only the first five years after officials have vacated their respective offices. An additional provision would require periodic evaluation of security measures provided to former leaders. Should the ‘πρόταση νόμου’ pass, overall costs to the state related to these ‘ωφελήματα’, which currently stand at €700,000 annually, are expected to decrease significantly. The ‘πρώην Πρόεδροι’ enjoying these benefits are Nikos Anastasiadis, George Vassiliou, Giannakis Omirou, Marios Karoyan and Dimitris Syllouris.
