As the official election period commences, stipulations regarding campaign expenses for candidates have been clarified. Candidates aiming for MEP positions may spend up to €50,000, while those vying for mayoral and regional governor roles can allocate up to €30,000 for their campaigns.
This announcement comes in response to the existing legislation specifying that campaign expenses incurred during the pre-election period do not contribute to the campaign expenses limit. Officially, the election period begins three months prior to the election date, this year being on 9/3/2024. Up until this date, candidates are free to invest as much as they wish into their respective campaigns.
This rule clarification sheds light on the path for many mayoral candidates, whose election campaigning already set underway last month. The spending regulation serves to ensure fair competition among candidates while maintaining financial transparency. It is a clear reminder to all contenders about the distinct periods of the election and their relevant financial rules.
