Odysseas Michaelidis, the Auditor General of the Republic, has provoked significant discussion regarding a potential suspension in the payment of pensions for particular officials, as reported by Andreas Antoniadis, the Accountant General of the Republic, to KYPE. This follows a recent ελεγχος συμμορφωσης (compliance check) undertaken by Michaelidis concerning the issue of multiple pensions. Antoniadis has since passed the request to the Attorney General for further legal advice.
In detailing his decision, Antoniadis noted that this matter arose following a letter from the Auditor General in which it was suggested, after the compliance check, that καταβολη συνταξεων (payment of pensions) to specific αξιωματουχοι (officials) be postponed. However, Antoniadis highlighted an existing legal opinion suggesting that suspending pensions, regardless of category, could potentially violate constitutional principles of good administration.
Further to this, Antoniadis stated that a binary approach regarding pension rights for employees or officials could not be adopted. Despite this, he says he is taking Michaelidis’ letter into serious consideration and is seeking further legal advice from the Attorney General of the Republic.
