A total of 26 Syrian migrants, including 15 men, 2 women, 7 children and 2 unaccompanied minors, were rescued from a boat near Ayia Napa, Cyprus, according to police sources. Promptly identified and safely brought to shore by a Coastal and Maritime Police vessel, the migrants are set to be relocated to the Detention Centre in Mennogeia.
This development comes as the Minister of the Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, prepares to meet with the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, to discuss Cyprus’ handling of immigration. Topics on the agenda include Cyprus’ migration strategy, the proposed European Union’s stance towards Syria, and the implementation of the Deputy Ministry of Migration in Cyprus.
Ioannou will present Cyprus’ initiative for re-evaluation of the EU’s attitude towards Syria, considering the changing situation in the country. The Minister will also discuss the developments in migration along the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus’ plan for migrant integration in the society.
The meeting aims to address some pressing issues in Cyprus and inform the Commissioner about the current immigration tendencies and migration flows in the country. It marks an important step towards enhancing European cooperation and response to migration.
