Drone Strikes in Kharkiv Disrupt Power and Claim Lives
In a recent surge of violence, a drone attack has once again brought devastation to the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, causing the death of four individuals and leaving a significant number of residents without electricity. The strikes, which occurred on Thursday, targeted not only residential buildings but also an energy facility in the region, exacerbating the hardships faced by civilians in Ukraine’s second-largest city.
According to Governor Oleh Synehubov, the aftermath of the attacks was grim, with three rescue workers tragically losing their lives to a secondary strike while attending to a damaged residential block. The governor’s message on the Telegram app revealed that 12 people sustained injuries, with three in a critical state. Amidst the chaos, emergency services were seen working tirelessly under the night sky, attempting to save a person trapped beneath the debris.
Zhanetta Kravchenko, 77, recounted her harrowing experience to Reuters, expressing gratitude for surviving despite the extensive damage to her home. The Kharkiv prosecutor’s office reported that the assault had also affected local businesses, a medical facility, and vehicles.
Officials stated that Russian forces deployed at least 15 drones in the Kharkiv attacks, with Ukraine’s military managing to intercept 11 out of 20 Shahed drones launched overnight. The Zmiivska thermal power plant was not spared, as it too became a target, continuing the strain on an already beleaguered energy infrastructure. Ukrenergo, the grid operator, announced that approximately 350,000 consumers were cut off from power due to the strikes.
The Dnipropetrovsk region also felt the impact of these hostilities as a solar power plant there was struck, leading to a fire that was later extinguished. Energy consumption restrictions were subsequently implemented in the region on Thursday morning.
Russia has consistently denied accusations of intentionally targeting civilian areas in its military campaign focused on capturing eastern and southern Ukraine. Despite this, Kharkiv remains a frequent site for drone and missile attacks, with recent incidents including an aerial bomb deployment that resulted in casualties.
The international community continues to watch with concern as these developments unfold, with Reuters noting that it could not independently verify all accounts due to the complexities of the war zone reporting.
