Limassol Police Clamp Down on Easter Bonfire Disruptions
In a bid to maintain public order during the Easter celebrations, Limassol Police have taken a proactive stance against potential disruptions. The police force carried out extensive checks in an operation specifically designed to prevent the unruly conduct often associated with the traditional ‘Lambraja’ Easter bonfire festivities.
The operation spanned several locations, with a focus on areas surrounding local churches known to be hotspots for the gathering of youths during this period. At the church of Saint Barnabas in Zakaki, a notable incident occurred where three teenagers, all aged 14, were apprehended by the authorities. These individuals were then transported to the Agios Ioannis Police Station to face necessary legal procedures.
Continuing their vigilant efforts, the police also encountered a group of ten individuals at the church of Saint Nicholas in Kato Polemidia. These individuals were similarly detained and taken into custody at the Polemidia Police Station.
With the presence of their parents and legal representatives, all of the youths involved were charged in writing. Following these formalities, they were released. The swift action by the police aims to send a clear message about the importance of respecting public safety and property, especially during times of festive celebration.
The Easter bonfires, a tradition that brings joy and warmth to many, can unfortunately also lead to instances of disruptive behaviour. Through operations such as these, Limassol Police are demonstrating their commitment to ensuring that these customs are enjoyed responsibly, allowing for a peaceful and harmonious holiday season for all residents and visitors alike.
