Drone Attack Strikes Russian-Held Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant
In a recent development, the Russian-installed administration of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, currently under Russian control, reported an attack by Ukraine. According to the statement released by the plant authorities, the assault included a strike on the dome of the plant’s sixth power unit. Despite the severity of the attack, it was confirmed that the dome sustained no damage.
Further details emerged from Russian state news agency TASS, which cited the plant authorities regarding an earlier drone attack. This incident resulted in damage to a truck that was parked in proximity to the station’s canteen area. However, the reports of both attacks could not be independently verified by Reuters at the time.
The administration overseeing the nuclear plant reassured that radiation levels remained stable and unchanged following the two strikes. The Zaporizhzhia facility, recognized as Europe’s largest nuclear plant, fell into Russian hands in March 2022 amid the conflict that saw Russia taking control over much of southeastern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region.
Located near the ongoing front lines, the nuclear site has been a point of contention and concern. Both Ukraine and Russia have consistently pointed fingers at each other, accusing one another of shelling the vicinity of the nuclear plant. Such actions have raised alarms over the potential risk of a nuclear disaster in the region.
The situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant remains tense and closely monitored by international observers, as any escalation could have far-reaching consequences not only for the immediate area but also for the broader European region.
