A Cypriot Trio’s Quest for a World Record at Mera Peak
In the realm of extreme adventures, a trio of intrepid mountaineers from Cyprus is preparing to undertake a monumental challenge. Alexis Economides, Trevor Jones, and Evgenia Konstantinou, all seasoned climbers with the Cyprus-based ‘Peak World Adventures,’ are setting their sights on Mera Peak in Nepal. Their objective is not only to scale the 6,476-meter summit but also to conduct what could be the highest fitness session ever recorded, aiming for a Guinness World Record.
Their previous conquest includes the summit of Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak outside of Asia. This year, between May 4 and 6, they face an even more daunting task. The team’s dedication is palpable as they train rigorously, bracing for the harsh conditions that await them at high altitude.
The expedition is not just about personal achievement; it carries an emotional weight as well. Economides and his team are climbing in memory of a sherpa guide who tragically succumbed to altitude sickness on Mera Peak. They plan to carry a picture and memento of their late friend to the summit as a tribute.
Despite the risks, including temperatures that can drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius and oxygen levels at less than half of sea level, the team remains optimistic. Economides has detailed the stringent requirements for the fitness session to be recognized by Guinness World Records: a 30-minute regimen consisting of squats, planks, and push-ups at over 6,000 meters.
Their endeavor is supported by sponsors Trutek Fastening Systems, Bitramp Technologies, Peak Condition, Ecopak, and Castle Auctions. With their backing and the team’s meticulous preparation, this expedition transcends personal glory—it’s a testament to human resilience and the spirit of adventure.
As they gear up for their record-setting attempt, Economides and his companions are a beacon of determination. They exemplify what it means to push beyond limits and face the inhospitable embrace of the Himalayas with courage and unwavering resolve.
