President Christodoulides Ready for Immediate Cyprus Talks
In a recent conference, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos highlighted the readiness of President Nikos Christodoulides to initiate immediate discussions to resolve the Cyprus problem. Kombos pointed out that the Turkish Cypriot leadership, under Ersin Tatar, is currently setting preconditions for the commencement of talks, which is delaying the process.
Engagement in dialogue is a priority for Christodoulides, who is open to conversing with both the Turkish Cypriot leader and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. “We have nothing to hide; on the contrary, we wish to find a way to proceed to a meaningful negotiation. And the way to get there is through dialogue,” Kombos stated, expressing a clear preference for transparent and direct communication.
The goal of the negotiations, according to Kombos, remains the establishment of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality, in line with UN resolutions. He warned against any compromise solutions that could be considered risky or unlawful.
Kombos also touched on the differing approaches of both sides, with one adhering to UN Security Council resolutions and the other seeking alternative starting points for discussions. The appointment of Maria Holguin as the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy and the efforts to appoint an EU envoy were highlighted as significant steps towards addressing the Cyprus issue within the broader context of EU-Turkey relations.
Addressing attempts to upgrade or give the impression of upgrading the status of the ‘TRNC’, Kombos referred to challenges faced due to Turkish influence within the Organisation of Turkic States. Despite these challenges, he assured that efforts would continue with “undiminished intensity.”
Kombos commended Spain and Poland for withdrawing from the Anatolian Phoenix exercise in June 2023 after diplomatic representations, illustrating international support for Cyprus’ position.
On the matter of Greek Cypriot property usurpation in the north, Kombos revealed that a strategic response plan has been developed and is being implemented in phases. This plan aims to create uncertainty among those involved in property usurpation, signaling a proactive approach by the ministry in cooperation with relevant authorities and services.
