Evacuation Underway in Kaminskoye Amid Rising Floodwaters
In an urgent response to rapidly rising water levels, the village of Kaminskoye located in Russia’s Kurgan region is currently undergoing evacuation procedures. The situation escalated after the water level surged by 1.4 metres (4.59 ft) overnight, prompting immediate action as communicated by regional governor Vadim Shumkov via the Telegram messaging app. The flooding has raised alarms for the safety and well-being of the local residents.
Kaminskoye, situated along the banks of the Tobol river, is not the only area facing the threat of inundation. The Tobol river’s trajectory, which extends through Kurgan—a city with a population of 300,000—is also at risk. Governor Shumkov expressed concerns that a deluge could impact Kurgan in the imminent future. In preparation, efforts are being concentrated on reinforcing a dam within the city to mitigate potential damage and flooding.
“We can only hope the floodplain stretches wide and the ground absorbs as much water as possible in its way,” Shumkov remarked, highlighting the reliance on natural topography to alleviate the situation. Meanwhile, the city of Orenburg, which lies on the Ural river, has already experienced the adverse effects of the flooding. Hundreds of houses were submerged as waters encroached upon the cityscape, with deputy mayor Alexei Kudinov reporting to RIA news agency about the overnight crisis.
Kudinov provided a slight glimmer of hope, indicating that the peak of the flooding is expected to hit on Friday and that water levels should begin to recede within two days. Despite this forecast, the immediate focus remains on the evacuation efforts and ensuring the safety of all affected residents as they face this natural calamity.
