A New Horizon for Marine Sciences and Sustainable Development
The coastal city of Larnaca is poised to become a hub for marine education and research, as plans for the new School of Marine Sciences, Technology, and Sustainable Development advance. The collaborative request by the Larnaca Municipality and the Technological University of Cyprus (TEPAK) has gained significant momentum following a positive evaluation from the Ministry of Finance.
TEPAK’s Rector, Panagiotis Zafeiris, shared that the university is swiftly moving forward with the establishment of an International Advisory Committee. This committee’s role will be pivotal, as it works in conjunction with the Larnaca Municipality to finalize the architectural plans for the School and to complete the drafting of its study programmes. Zafeiris expressed optimism about the details being prepared for submission to the Ministry of Finance, which will play a crucial role in the state’s final decisions regarding the project.
The proposed plans for the school’s architectural development are expected to complement those of the CMMI Excellence Centre. A synergy between these two institutions could foster an innovative educational environment, promoting excellence in marine sciences and sustainable practices.
According to sources from philenews, the preferred location for the school is in Mackenzie, a site already equipped with the necessary permits for construction. This area was previously designated for the CMMI buildings, indicating that much of the groundwork has already been laid out. With a meeting between TEPAK officials and the Mayor of Larnaca on the horizon, stakeholders are eager to discuss forthcoming actions.
The establishment of this educational institution is not just a local concern but has garnered attention at the highest levels of government. The President of the Republic has made a public commitment to the school’s creation in Larnaca, suggesting that its realization is a matter of national importance. All eyes are now on the Council of Ministers, who will make the final decision, marking a significant step towards enriching Cyprus’s educational landscape and reinforcing its commitment to marine conservation and sustainable development.
