Azerbaijan to Advocate for Fossil Fuel Investment at COP29
In a statement that underscores the complex balance between energy needs and environmental priorities, Azerbaijan’s President, Ilham Aliyev, announced on Friday that his country will champion the rights of oil and gas producers at the forthcoming COP29 climate summit. Despite global efforts to curb emissions, Aliyev emphasized the persistent demand for fossil fuels, signaling that Azerbaijan will use its role as host to advocate for continued investment in the sector.
Aliyev’s remarks came during a climate conference in Berlin, where he highlighted Azerbaijan’s position as a nation rich in fossil fuels. He acknowledged the world’s reliance on these resources, stating, “
The president’s comments follow the conclusion of last year’s U.N. climate summit, which ended with a collective agreement on transitioning away from fossil fuels to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Despite this, the reality remains that energy-related carbon dioxide emissions hit a record high last year, according to the International Energy Agency.
Aliyev detailed Azerbaijan’s plans to expand natural gas exports to Europe to 20 billion cubic meters by 2027, a move he described as responsible given Europe’s search for new gas sources. This increase is particularly pertinent as European nations seek alternatives after Russia’s reduction in gas deliveries post its invasion of Ukraine.
As nations prepare for the COP29 summit, the world will be watching closely to see how countries plan to reconcile their climate commitments with the pressing energy demands of today. Azerbaijan’s stance reflects the ongoing debate over fossil fuel investment amidst the urgent need to address climate change.
